Natural gas and propane can both fuel an automatic standby generator, but the right choice for a Nova Scotia home depends on what is available at the property, how long outages tend to last and how the household wants to manage fuel. The generator itself may be capable of operating on either fuel, yet output, piping, regulators and runtime can differ.

Direct answer: Natural gas is usually the convenience choice where a suitable utility connection already exists. Propane is often the flexibility choice for rural and coastal properties because fuel is stored on site. Neither is automatically better; the fuel system must be sized for the generator's maximum demand and the home's other appliances.
Natural gas: continuous supply without a storage tank
A natural-gas standby generator connects to the home's gas service. During an electrical outage, it can continue operating without the homeowner scheduling fuel delivery, provided the gas network remains available and the service has adequate capacity.
That convenience is valuable for extended outages and vacant homes. The constraints are availability and capacity. Many rural Nova Scotia properties do not have natural-gas service, and an existing meter or line may not be sized for a large generator plus furnaces, water heaters, fireplaces or other gas appliances.
Ask the installer to confirm generator output on natural gas, required inlet pressure and whether the utility or gas contractor must approve an upgrade.
Propane: stored energy on the property
Propane works well where natural gas is unavailable. Because the supply is on site, the homeowner can plan a reserve around the generator and other propane appliances. Propane may also allow a generator model to produce slightly more output than it does on natural gas, depending on the equipment.
The tradeoff is finite runtime. Tank capacity, usable fill level, outdoor temperature, generator load and other propane appliances all affect how long the system can run. Delivery access can also be difficult after widespread snow, wind or tree damage.
Compare the complete fuel system, not the price per litre
Fuel choice affects more than operating cost. Include:
- existing service or tank capacity;
- pipe length and diameter;
- regulator and meter requirements;
- generator output on each fuel;
- expected load during an outage;
- delivery access and supplier response;
- cold-weather performance;
- other appliances sharing the supply.
A low fuel price is not useful if the system cannot deliver enough fuel when the generator and furnace are both operating.
Which fuel is more reliable during a Nova Scotia storm?
Reliability is property-specific. Natural gas avoids tank depletion and delivery delays. Propane creates an on-site reserve that is independent of the electric grid and may be available where gas lines do not reach. Severe events can affect roads, utility infrastructure and supply chains in different ways, so neither fuel is risk-free.
The practical question is which system can be installed safely, supplied at full load and maintained through the type of outages your property experiences.

- What output does the selected generator provide on each fuel?
- Can the existing gas meter, propane tank and piping handle the total connected load?
- How many hours of runtime are expected at 25%, 50% and full load?
- What appliances share the fuel supply?
- Can the supplier reach the property after a major storm?
- Is load management needed to reduce fuel use?
