Tank capacity, connected load, heating fuel use and delivery access determine whether the system can support the household through a long Island outage.

    Direct answer: Size the propane supply from the generator's documented consumption at several load levels, then include every other propane appliance that may operate during the outage. Build a conservative refill plan before storm season and reduce unnecessary electrical loads to extend runtime.

    Start with the electrical load plan

    Fuel planning begins with generator sizing. A system powering refrigeration, lights and heating controls uses less fuel than one also carrying an electric water heater, range, dryer and multiple heat pumps. Load management can protect essential systems while reducing fuel consumption.

    For many PEI homes, the priority list includes a well pump, sump pump, heating controls, refrigerator, freezer, communications and selected outlets. Large comfort loads should be added only after the essentials are secure.

    Include propane used by the rest of the home

    A generator may share the propane supply with a furnace, boiler, water heater, range, fireplace or other appliances. A tank that appears adequate for the generator alone may not support the total winter demand.

    Ask the propane contractor to evaluate tank capacity, regulators, pipe sizing and simultaneous appliance load. Cold weather and tank level can affect the ability of propane to vaporize fast enough for a large generator.

    Plan around Island-wide storm conditions

    PEI has created a Fuel Station Resiliency Program so selected stations can continue operating during large-scale outages. That improves community resilience, but households should still avoid assuming fuel will always be immediately available after a major storm. Roads, bridges, debris and demand can all affect delivery and retail access.

    Schedule routine fills before the busiest storm period, keep supplier contact information available offline and ask how emergency deliveries are prioritized. Do not use unapproved containers or improvised fuel connections.

    Runtime estimates should use a range

    Generator fuel use changes with electrical load. Ask for consumption estimates at approximately quarter, half and full load, then calculate a conservative range from the usable tank capacity. Avoid a single marketing claim such as "seven days of power" unless it states the generator size, load and other propane use.

    Load management can extend runtime by cycling non-essential equipment. Simple behaviour also matters: delay laundry, avoid electric cooking where practical and do not run high-demand loads merely because the circuit is available.

    Keep the installation and fuel system accessible

    The generator and tank need safe clearances and service access. Plan snow removal and storm-debris cleanup without blocking air intake, exhaust or technician access. Protect the area from vehicle impact and do not create a tight enclosure around the generator.

    Maritime Electric states that standby generators must be installed by a licensed electrician. Fuel work should also be completed by qualified personnel under applicable requirements.
