Where batteries are strongest
A home battery can switch quickly, operate without on-site combustion and power selected circuits with little noise. It pairs naturally with solar, though a battery can also be installed without solar depending on the system.
Batteries are well suited to refrigerators, communications, lighting, security systems, medical devices and home-office loads. They also work during short interruptions without requiring fuel delivery or engine maintenance.
Their main limitation is stored energy. Running a large heat pump, electric water heater, range or multiple days of household load may require substantial battery capacity and careful load management.
Where standby generators are strongest
A natural-gas or propane standby generator can operate for an extended period as long as the fuel supply remains available. It can support larger motor loads and broad home coverage, making it attractive for wells, sump pumps, heating and longer rural or storm-related outages.
Generators require an outdoor installation, transfer equipment, maintenance and fuel planning. They also produce noise and exhaust, so placement and permits matter.
British Columbia hazards change the comparison
PreparedBC notes that power outages can be caused by high winds, freezing rain, snow, extreme heat and wildfires. The right backup system may therefore differ by region:
- Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island homes may focus on windstorms, trees and sump-pump protection.
- Interior homes may prioritize wildfire-related interruptions, heat and winter cold.
- Rural properties may need well pumps and longer runtime.
- Urban apartments or tight lots may have limited space for a standby generator.

Compare power, energy and duration
Generator ratings are usually expressed in kilowatts, which describe power available at one time. Battery systems are described by both power and kilowatt-hours, which describe stored energy. A battery may start a load successfully but deplete quickly if that load runs for hours.
Build a table of essential equipment, running power and hours of use. Then compare:
- battery usable capacity and inverter output;
- generator output on the selected fuel;
- expected outage duration;
- fuel or solar availability;
- maintenance and replacement timelines;
- installation space and permit requirements.
A hybrid approach
A UPS can keep internet, computers and medical electronics operating during the seconds before a generator starts. A larger home battery can cover overnight quiet hours or short outages, while a generator recharges batteries or supports longer events depending on system design.
Hybrid systems need proper engineering so sources do not conflict and transfer equipment operates safely. Do not combine products through improvised wiring.
Cost and maintenance
Battery cost depends on usable storage, inverter capacity, electrical work and whether solar integration is included. Generator cost depends on size, transfer equipment, fuel, site work and permits. Neither option has a universal payback; the value is resilience, avoided damage and continuity.
Batteries require relatively little routine attention but eventually lose capacity. Generators need engine maintenance, battery checks and exercise testing. Compare lifecycle cost, not only purchase price.
