Backup power has a different role in a rural or coastal Newfoundland and Labrador home. An outage may interrupt heating, private water, septic equipment, refrigeration and communications at the same time. Long distances, exposed roads and severe weather can also delay travel, fuel delivery and restoration.

Direct answer: Build the generator plan around heat, water, wastewater, refrigeration and communications first. Size for motor-starting demand, maintain an independent emergency kit and make sure the fuel and service plan still works if roads are blocked or the house is unattended.
1. Keep the heating system operating
Oil and propane heating systems still need electricity for controls, burners, pumps and blowers. Heat pumps and electric baseboards require even more generator capacity. During a winter outage, loss of heat can lead to unsafe indoor temperatures and frozen plumbing.
A generator assessment should identify the main heating load, any electric auxiliary heat and the minimum zones needed to protect the house. It may be more practical to power one primary heat source than every electric heating circuit.
2. Protect private water and septic systems
A private well pump can have high startup demand. Water-treatment systems, pressure pumps, sewage pumps and lift stations may also require power. List every motor and voltage rather than assuming "well water" is one load.
Plan water storage as well. A generator failure, pump fault or frozen line can still interrupt supply, so keep emergency drinking water even with standby power.
3. Prioritize sump pumps and drainage
Coastal storms and rapid snowmelt can increase water pressure around foundations. The generator can power the primary sump pump, but a second pump, battery backup and high-water alarm add resilience if the main pump fails mechanically.
Keep discharge routes clear and inspect them before freeze-up. Backup electricity cannot correct a blocked or frozen discharge line.
4. Maintain communications
Internet, cellular equipment and local radio may be essential for weather updates and emergency instructions. A UPS can keep a modem, router and communications equipment operating during the short transfer delay before a standby generator starts.
Keep paper copies of utility, fuel supplier, healthcare and local emergency contacts. In remote areas, assume that mobile coverage and charging options may be limited.
5. Choose a fuel plan that works with local access
For many properties, propane is the practical standby fuel; remote locations should also plan around supplier access and safe tank placement. Ask the supplier how the property is served during widespread outages and what tank access is required in winter. Generator runtime should be calculated at several electrical loads and should include fuel used by heating appliances.
Avoid designing a system that depends on frequent delivery during the same weather that may close roads. At the same time, fuel storage and piping must follow applicable safety and environmental requirements.
6. Use automatic operation where delay creates damage
A portable generator can be useful for limited loads, but it requires someone to deploy it outdoors. A standby generator can start automatically when the house is empty or when weather makes manual setup difficult.
Automatic operation is especially valuable for sump pumps, freeze protection and medical devices. It still needs maintenance, a healthy starting battery and a reliable fuel supply.
7. Complete permits and inspection
Provincial approval is required before installing or repairing electrical equipment, including generators and private-generation equipment, and permits are generally issued to registered electrical contractors. Approved transfer equipment prevents backfeed onto utility lines. Keep permit, inspection and warranty records with the generator manual.
